The 6th ranked Houston Cougars left the Boise State Broncos in the driver’s seat to a New Years Six Bowl berth Saturday afternoon with their 46-40 intra-division loss at Navy.
With the defeat, Houston (2-1 AAC) effectively falls 2 games behind Navy (3-0 AAC) in their American Athletic Conference West Division race.
Regardless of how Houston performs in their remaining games (including against 7th ranked Louisville on November 17th) they cannot earn the Group of Five’s automatic bid to a New Years Six Bowl game without winning their conference, even if they finish the season ranked ahead of Boise State.
It’s a simple recipe for the Broncos to earn the Group of Five’s berth from here on out: win the Mountain West Conference and finish ranked ahead of the other four Group of Five champions in the College Football Playoff Rankings.
Navy would need to lose two American Athletic Conference games and Houston would have to run the table in-conference for the Cougars to threaten the Broncos unless the division ends in a three-way tie involving the Cougars and Midshipmen.
Boise State continues their pursuit of a Mountain West Conference Championship and New Year’s Six Bowl berth on Saturday when they host Colorado State. Kickoff is set for 8:15 pm.
