Pat Dembley “keeps it 100,” commits to Leon Rice & Boise State

When Pat Dembley was younger he used to always talk to his friends about how he was going to play Division 1 basketball ball at a University.

“I wasn’t the best academically, I used to get in trouble.”

He said these struggles created a lot of doubters around him.

They used to tell him he “wasn’t (Division 1-material). But I finally proved them wrong.”

“It’s just a weight off my shoulders that I’m a step closer to my dreams, I just feel like everything I’ve been working for is all coming true.”

Yestrday Mr. Dembley announced his commitment to the Boise State basketball program on Twitter where he thanked his Momma, Pops, and assistant coaches at Iowa Western Community College.

“My relationship with my mom, (we’re) just like best friends, literally. She pushed me and believed in me when no one did. We are the closest and (through) her relationship (with me) she just showed me respect and how to be mature and be responsible.”

“My pops (has) just been real (with me). He tells me how things (are) and I needed that growing up (because) I didn’t used to listen (to that kind of stuff), but when I got older I started to appreciate it more and more. He just showed me what it’s like to be a man and stay level headed and humble throughout everything that I (have) been through. He… was by my side whenever I needed him.”

Dembley said when Coach Michael Johnette at IWCC recruited him out of high school he asked his future mentor if he thought he was Division 1-matrial.

“He said, ‘Yes you are, but you are going to work really hard and I’m going to push you to be the best you can be.’ I took it and ran with it during my freshman year. He put his trust in me a lot and let me run the team and I trusted him because I know he’s a real coach and keeps it 100. ‘Til this day he tells me ‘Don’t get satisfied, we have more work to do’ and I %100 agree.”

“Without him I wouldn’t be in the position I am in today. I appreciate everything he has done for me.”

His other mentor and IWCC, Coach James Bankhead may have believed in Boise State’s newest basketball commit even more.

“He told me you are going to get paid for this sport one day after he saw me play in High School. When I came to Iowa Western he fully put his trust in me (to be his Point Guard) and said ‘I think you are the best Point Guard in the country but you cannot stop working.’ Me and him have conversations all the time about what I need to work on and after he compliments me he always says ‘Don’t stop working and always be humble.'”

Dembley said he’s super-excited to get the weight of his commitment off of his shoulders by making his decision to continue his academic and athlete pursuits at Boise State, a place that he feels will treat him right and push him to be the best he can be.

He said he doesn’t have a favorite college basketball player, “it’s myself, but when I was younger it (was former two-time NCAA Champion and Bob Cousy Award recipient with the UConn Huskies) Shabazz Napier.”

“(I also) model my game after Damian Lillard, Kyrie Irving, Chris Paul and Steve Nash.”

Dembley says his ultimate goal at Boise State will be to win a Mountian West Championship and make a run in the NCAA tourney.
